Position Title: Unit Builder

Reports To: Foreman or General Foreman

The Unit Builder performs mechanical maintenance on GPMTD transit buses, support vehicles and operating facilities. With a minimum of supervision, the Unit Builder is responsible for troubleshooting mechanical problems, repairing malfunctioning parts and systems, performing short- and long-term preventative maintenance, determining the need for parts and the time needed to complete each task. The Unit Builder must have the ability to understand technical manuals and diagrams, use the necessary tools and equipment in a competent manner, while performing jobs in a safe manner. The Unit Builder shall complete records and document tasks completed, assist and instruct other maintenance employees with maintenance tasks and assist with the overall maintenance of the GPMTD building and grounds.


  • Must have a valid Illinois Driver's License for at least two (2) years and a safe operating record. Have the ability to obtain and maintain a valid Class A CDL license with combination vehicle, air brake and passenger and wrecker endorsements.

  • Must have verifiable experience in major component rebuilding and repairing on heavy-duty buses and/or trucks.

  • Have full set of hand tools as outlined by the District and be skilled in operation of all tools and equipment required to perform major component repairs. Must furnish all required tools generally associated with you specialty unless otherwise designated.

  • Possess complete understanding of engines, transmissions, differentials, electrical systems, heating and air conditioning, brakes, chassis, suspension, air system, bulkhead and steering.

  • Knowledgeable and skilled in the use of safety equipment and precautions related to this type of work

  • Possess the physical ability to lift 100 pounds to waist level, carry up to 50 pounds, utilize tools, reach, stoop, squat, crawl, bend, kneel, lay on the floor, climb a ladder and stairs, push equipment and turn knobs, screws and bolts

  • Have physical ability to stand for an extended period of time.
