Job Title: Bus Operator

FLSA Status: Hourly, non-exempt
Employment Status: Part-time | Union
Rate of Pay: 55.14% of Top Operator's Wage during training; 75% of Top Operator's Wage upon promotion from Trainee to Regular Part-Time or Full-Time
Benefits: Medical, Dental, Vision, Pension, Voluntary Supplemental, and PTO upon promotion to full-time
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The Bus Operator is responsible for operating district equipment in a safe, effective and responsible manner. The position requires the ability to communicate with other operators and passengers in a tactful, professional and courteous manner. This position requires exposure to dust, exhaust, and inclement weather. The Bus Operators must be available for work during their scheduled days and times.
PRE-REQUISITES:
- Must have high school diploma or GED
- Must be at least 21 years old
- Valid Illinois Driver's License for at least three (3) years and a Good Driving Record.
- Ability to obtain a Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with airbrake and passenger endorsements.
- Must be available for work, 7 days a week, between 4AM and Midnight, each day; or, as scheduled.
- Must have the ability to read and comprehend District policies, procedures and training materials as well as State and Local traffic laws.
- Ability to communicate verbally with customers and fellow employees.
- Requires physical ability to bend, lift up to 50lbs, twist, stoop, and maintain dexterity in fingers to utilize wheelchair securement.
- Requires physical ability to operate all GPMTD passenger service and support equipment.
- Successfully complete post-offer physical and drug screen.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Operate a 30-35 foot bus safely, effectively and professionally. Operate bus for extended periods of time in fair, as well as inclement weather, road and traffic conditions.
- Work a varied schedule that may change daily. No minimum hours, 30 hours maximum each week.
- Required to communicate with customers, including customers with disabilities, in a courteous, fair and professional manner, under a variety of conditions and situations.
- Must read and comprehend District policies and procedures, State and Local traffic laws, schedules and maps.
- Able to understand verbal and written instructions from Supervisors and Management.
- Maintain Company Policy while fulfilling duties of the position.
- Assist Passengers in making connections through verbal and physical descriptions
AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:
- Provide comfortable and safe transportation to customers in a courteous and professional manner.
- Report Safety & Passenger Concerns to Supervisors, Management and Maintenance in an appropriate and approved manner.
- Work overtime as necessary and in accordance with work rules and current labor agreement.
- Adhere to District policies and procedures, contractual language and verbal and written instructions from Supervisors, Dispatchers and Management.
LICENSE:
- Must have an active CDL/CDLP with airbrake and passenger endorsements by day of New Hire Orientation
